A lamp socket, also known as the Edison screw fitting, is a threaded screw base used to hold and connect a light bulb to a power source. Invented by Thomas Edison and marketed in 1909, these sockets typically have right-hand threads, which allow the light bulb to be screwed in clockwise and removed counterclockwise. To deter theft in public places, the threads are sometimes reversed to prevent installation in common floodlight fixtures. Most standing lamps consist of a body, a base where the cord enters, a harp to support the shade, and a socket, which receives the cord at one end and the lightbulb at the other. Replacing a lamp holder: Cut off the power supply to the relevant circuit from the consumer unit. Remove the shade, frame and light bulb. Undo the lampholder cover and slide it up the flex to give you access to the screws connecting the cores to terminals in the socket. Release the cores and remove the socket. Feed the flex through the new socket. Attach the cores to their terminals again: brown to live (L), blue to neutral (N) and green-and-yellow to earth (E). Attach any grips securing the flex in place. Push the cover back down the flex and screw it onto the lampholder. 1. Switch off the power at the consumer unit for the circuit concerned. If you have removable fuses at your consumer unit, switch off the power at the consumer unit and remove the fuse for this circuit. Or, in the case of a table lamp, switch off and remove the plug from the power supply. 2. Unscrew the fitting to expose the separate components. The construction of metal and plastic ones is a little different as you will notice from the pictures. 3. Feed the top cover (and retaining pieces in the case of the metal fitting) over the flex and push them along out of the way....
