What's the light bulb socket?
2014-01-07 16:51:53

Light bulb sockets are an essential for any fixture and sometimes they need to be replaced when they wear out. We have many different kinds including the more standard types along with HID and low voltage sockets as well. They are usually a porcelain construction, but some of the compact fluorescent ones are a simple plastic as there is less heat associated with those. These are the highest quality and will be a suitable replacement for what you have now. Light bulb sockets in one form or another always need replacement as they get older, so as you see a few degrade, you may want to stock up for others that are bound to need changing down the road.

When you look inside a screw base you see two major parts: A threaded outer area, and a small contact point or strip that will touch the bottom of the bulb. That center point is the socket's hot electrical contact point, and the larger threaded area is the neutral conductor.

Lamps are usually inserted in lampholder sockets which provide electrical connections to the lamp and support it in the lighting fixture. The use of sockets allows lamps to be safely and conveniently replaced (re-lamping) at the end of life, or to change power, color, lighting technology or etc. There are many different standards for these lampholders, created by de facto and by various standards bodies. A general coding system is a letter or abbreviation followed by a number. Some miniature lamps have wire leads suitable for direct connection to wires; some reflector lamps have screw terminals for wire connections.
