A lamp socket, also known as the Edison screw fitting, is a threaded screw base used to hold and connect a light bulb to a power source. Invented by Thomas Edison and marketed in 1909, these sockets typically have right-hand threads, which allow the light bulb to be screwed in clockwise and removed counterclockwise. To deter theft in public places, the threads are sometimes reversed to prevent installation in common light fixtures. Most standing lamps consist of a body, a base where the cord enters, a harp to support the shade, and a socket, which receives the cord at one end and the lightbulb at the other. The cord usually runs through a hollow threaded rod from the base to the socket. When a lamp won't work and you know the bulb is OK, check the cord for damage. If the insulation is worn and cracked, replace the entire cord (see Rewiring Lamps, Related Projects). If the cord is OK, the problem is most likely in the socket. Most lamps have felt bases that must be removed before repairing the lamps. Remove the felt by paring it off with a utility knife. After the repair, reapply the felt with white glue....

Light bulb bases and sockets are normally defined by a letter-number-letter format, with the last letter optional. The first letter designates the shape or form of the base, the numbers represent either the width of the base or the distance between the pins. The second letter designates the number of pins or contacts on the lamp. The numbers are normally in millimeters. LED light bulb sockets and bases are manufactured to the same standards as halogen, incandescent and other traditional lights. Lamp Base: In the US, "medium" indicates a base that is about 1" in diameter. Synonyms for medium are "standard", "Edison" and E26 lampholder. It's best to call medium "medium" or "E26" because when other bases are being discussed, the two other synonyms may cause confusion. Here in the US and elsewhere, there are other screw-thread bases that are prefixed with an "E" followed by a number indicating diameter expressed in millimeters. "Edison" is medium in the US, but only by general usage and not by any technicality, unless one is inclined to argue (probably unwisely) that E11, E12, etc., is not an acknowledgment of Edison's contribution. E26 (American) and E27 (European) Edison bases are the same diameter (26.38mm), and only the length of the threaded area is different (26mm vs 27.5mm). Either bulb will interchange perfectly in either type socket. E26 LED light bulbs and E27 LED light bulbs are Edison based LED lights that have a medium screw base. This is a standard household light bulbs base for traditional incandescent lights. The E stands for Edison and the 26 and 27 refer to the diameter of the screw base. In some, but not all cases an E26 LED light bulbs have a slightly smaller voltage range to include only 100VAC to 130VAC where E27 LED lights will support up to 80VAC to 240VAC voltage range....
