.Unplug the lamp and remove the light bulb.Start by pushing the lamp cord through the 1/4" hole toward the bottom of the base. Obviously, you want the plug on the far side of the cord and the bare wires to be pushed into the 1/4" hole and into the center of the porcelain socket.
.Unscrew with your fingers the filial or decorative screw that holds the lamp shade in the lamp harp. Remove the lamp shade. Place your fingers on the harp sides where they start to bend up around the light bulb area on the lamp. Squeeze the harp sides toward each other with your fingers to get the ends of the harp, called the legs, to pull out of their slots or seats on the lamp and remove the harp.
.Squeeze the socket shell and pull it out of the lamp base. If it won't squeeze apart, pry the shell from the base with a flat blade screwdriver.Disassemble the porcelain socket by removing the bottom metal piece and ceramic washer. You remove the bottom metal piece by unscrewing the two phillips screws in the bottom of the socket where the bulb is screwed in.
.Loosen the set-screw on the lamp socket base. Unscrew the porcelain lamp holder and remove it.
.Pull the wires out of the lamp gently. Unscrew the wire terminals with a screwdriver and unhook the wires. You will notice that the wires are knotted -- leave the wire end knotted; this prevents the lamp cord from pulling up and out of the lamp during use.Reassemble the porcelain socket carefully and make absolutely sure that the wires only touch their intended screw and do not touch any other metal. And make sure there are no bare wires that extend outside the metal base on the porcelain socket. Finally, double check that you have the ceramic washer that is installed in-between the wiring on the bottom of the socket and the metal bottom piece. Reinstall and snug the two phillips screws from the bottom of the socket where the bulb is installed.
.Cut the wire ends off with wire cutters. Strip 3/8 inch off the end of the jacket insulation of the wires using the wire strippers.Install the socket into the wood base by pulling gently on the cord to pull the excess wire out of the base toward the plug and simultaneously guide the porcelain socket into the 1.5" hole. Also, orient the socket while you are pushing it into the hole so that the cut out side of your metal socket shaft is open toward the 1/4" hole where the lamp cord exits the lamp base.
.Pick up the lamp cord plug. Follow the side of the wire that connects to the wide plug blade; this is the neutral wire. The neutral wire may be a different color, have ridges, indentations or colors printed on it to identify it.
.Wrap the neutral wire counter-clockwise around the silver colored terminal screw on the bottom of the new socket base. Tighten the terminal screw with a screwdriver.
.Wrap the hot wire counter-clockwise around the brass colored screw on the new socket base. Tighten the terminal screw with a screwdriver.
.Gently insert the socket base into the base cover, bending the wires to fit into the cover as you do so.
.push the socket back into the 1.5" hole, careful to orient the socket metal shaft properly. Then allow hot glue to cool for a few minutes. I do not recommend allowing glue to get into the 1/4" hole for the cord because it may make removal of the socket at a later date impossible. It is better to put glue just holding the socket bottom to the bottom of the 1.5" hole.
.Plug the lamp back in. Screw in a new light bulb and turn on the lamp to test it. If it does not work, check to ensure that you did not switch the wires when you attached them onto the halogen socket.
