High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and replacing them with energy efficient alternatives
such as linear fluorescent, compact fluorescent, induction lamps or LED lamps.
Proponents of this wholesale shift away from HID claimed low efficiency, poor color,
quick lamp lumen depreciation among the failures of HID. Some of the claims were valid
for fixtures with magnetic ballasts, also known as core and coil ballasts. Some of the
claims do not take into account deficiencies of fluorescent and LED technologies.
LED (light-emitting diode) light bulbs are an energy and cost-efficient way to light your home. With government regulations halting the production of traditional incandescent light bulbs in recent years, new options have surfaced. The first option created was the compact fluorescent lamp, or CFL. These curly fluorescent bulbs are more energy efficient and last longer than an incandescent, but the bulb contains mercury and takes a while to shine at its brightest.
LED light bulbs are even more efficient to run than CFL bulbs and are just as affordable....

Interior Screw Shell:
Aluminum: Aluminum is the most common and cost effective material for the socket interior.
Copper: Copper is an alternative to Aluminum where the fixture is exposed to weather. Porch fixtures should use sockets with copper screw shell and porcelain body.
Exterior Cap and Shell:
Brass: Brass is the most common materials in a socket shell. There are different finishes in the brass shell like; polished (shiny), antique, and unfinished
Brass plated: Brass plated shells are similar to the brass shells in appearance with a cheaper price. A brass plated shell comes with similar finishes to the solid brass shell.
Nickel plated: Shiny silver finish....

Lamp Socket Terminology:
Material - What the socket is made with. examples: metal, porcelain, and plastic.
Cap - The exterior base of the socket, locks into the shell
Shell - The exterior top of the lamp socket, locks into the base
UNO Thread - A tapped portion of the shell for connecting a lamp shade with an UNO fitter
Mogul - A large specialty socket made for Mogul bulbs, found mostly in floor lamps
Keyless - A socket that does not have a switch in the socket body, used with cord switches or chandeliers
So, you have to decide what you want from the track system. Just general lighting, maybe go with the larger par types. If you are looking to spotlight art, keepsakes or some other objects or if the is an issue where you need it to be closer to the mounting surface, maybe go with a LV system....

The Porcelain Lamp Sockets (lamp holders) includes all candelabra, medium (standard) sizes, and mogul size sockets. Porcelain lamp sockets are more heat resistant and typically last much longer than regular phenolic (black plastic) lamp sockets. These porcelain sockets work well when used in fixtures with little or no air circulation available for the light bulb.
Porcelain: The most durable and long lasting shell, porcelain is more heat and weather resistant than any other shell type. Where the light is outside or hangs with a bulb facing down, a porcelain socket is highly recommended.
The base socket has a porcelain body that is gray glazed with ceramic arc shield, allowing for more heat resistance. The 18 AWG, glass braid SEW-2 lugged leads are rated for 200 degrees Celsius, 600 watts and 600 volts. They are 9 inches long and stripped 1/2 inch for convenience. The socket features a durable, nickel-plated copper alloy screw shell, lamp grips, and two screws for easy installation. It is pulse-rated, so it is ideal for use with any medium base pulse-start metal halide bulbs....

Expect professional grade performance from our HID metal halide lamps. Ideal in retail, commercial and residential applications, metal halide HID bulbs have a long life and produce a crisp white light perfect for areas where color rendering is critical. From standard metal halide bulbs to PAR shape pulse start MH lamps, our comprehensive product selection is sure to impress. Our HID metal halide lineup includes:
• Standard lamps
• Pulse start bulbs
• Ceramic lamps
• Teflon coated bulbs
• Double ended lamps
the manufacturer’s/lamp’s name;
the lamp’s nominal wattage;
the type of method used to mount the lamp, along with the number of ends in the sockets used to mount the lamps and;
the lamp’s color temperature.
Metal halide lamps have two basic configurations; those with an outer envelope and those without. In the former, the lamp’s basic construction is an inner envelope (called the arc tube), which contains the arc, and an outer envelope (called the bulb) which filters out ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and shields the inner arc tube. These lamps are typically single-ended (SE) and use a threaded mount to screw into a lamp socket. The second lamp configuration lacks the outer envelope and typically has two ends (double-ended, DE) that need to be inserted into a lamp socket, as we shall discuss shortly.
The metal halide ballast provides the proper starting voltage, operating voltage and current to the lamp to initiate and sustain the arc. HID lamps have a negative resistance characteristic, which causes them to draw an increasing amount of current, hence need a current limiting device. The ballast provides these functions. There are several different ballast types used for for HID lighting. Basically, there are two primary distinctions between ballasts: "lag circuit" and "lead circuit" ballasts. The current in lag type ballasts is controlled by an inductive resistance in series with the lamp, whereas in lead type ballasts it current control is provided by both inductive and capacitive resistances in series with the lamp....
